13th April, 2023: Octopus Energy’s Electroverse, an EV roaming service, has launched Plug & Charge technology in the UK to enable customers with compatible cars to experience a hassle free EV charging process.
With Plug & Charge, drivers can simply plug their cars into a public charging station and leave. The car automatically syncs with the charging point through the customer’s Electroverse account and initiates the charging process without requiring any card, application, or website. Moreover, Octopus manages the charging and billing processes automatically.
Electroverse’s technology enables Plug & Charge to function for owners of Volkswagen’s iD and Cupra Born electric vehicles when using IONITY’s ultra rapid charging stations throughout Europe. Several prominent automakers such as BMW, Audi, Skoda, Mercedes, and Ford have expressed their intention to adopt the technology, along with various charging networks. Electroverse has achieved a significant milestone by exceeding 400,000 charge points worldwide, which are offered by more than 460 charge point brands.
In an official press release by Octopus Energy, Matt Davies, Director of Octopus Electroverse was quoted saying, “This Plug & Charge milestone shows how technology delivers better electric vehicle charging. It provides a roadmap for the future of seamless public charging - and we’ve got big plans to roll it out further. We’re making it easier for car manufacturers and charging networks to support Plug & Charge and create a simpler experience for EV drivers.”
Octopus Energy’s new Plug & Charge technology is a significant step forward for EV drivers in the UK. As the popularity of EVs continues to grow, it is clear that Plug & Charge technology will be an essential part of the infrastructure needed to support this transition.
