Belgium, April 25, 2025: Volvo Cars has officially commenced production of its highly popular EX30 electric SUV at its historic Ghent plant in Belgium, marking a significant step forward in the company’s ambitious electrification journey. This strategic move highlights Volvo’s commitment to building vehicles closer to key markets while supporting Europe's broader sustainability and competitiveness goals.
Volvo’s decision to manufacture the EX30 in Europe is designed to meet rising regional demand and strengthen its position in the rapidly expanding premium electric vehicle market. Volvo committed €200 million to upgrading the Ghent facility, including the introduction of a new car platform. The major upgrade has also generated around 350 new jobs, increasing the workforce to nearly 6,600 employees.
In an official press release by Volvo, Francesca Gamboni, Chief Manufacturing and Supply Chain Officer at Volvo Cars stated, “The EX30 is crucial for us as we continue to strengthen our position in the premium EV market in Europe. “Investing in the European production of the EX30 in Ghent perfectly aligns with our long-held strategy to build our cars where they sell best. Our flexible global footprint contributes to our resilience, allowing us to adjust our manufacturing plans with agility.”
In the same press release Ghent Plant Manager, Stefan Fesser stated that, “Following a decision in autumn 2023 to bring production of the EX30 to Ghent, we were able to industrialise the new model in record time. Thanks to the engagement and collaboration of the entire Ghent team, we cut the industrialisation time in half. Today, we are extremely proud to welcome the EX30 and demonstrate that new technology and innovation enable us to react more flexibly to market demands.”
In 2024, Volvo’s Ghent plant rolled out more than 186,000 vehicles, reinforcing its position as a key pillar in the company’s global production network. The strong output reflects the facility’s growing importance as Volvo expands its focus on electric and sustainable mobility solutions.
With the start of EX30 production, Volvo Cars not only strengthens its leadership in Europe’s electric vehicle market but also reaffirms its commitment to sustainable, forward-thinking manufacturing. As Volvo Cars accelerates its innovation and investment efforts, the Ghent plant emerges as a key pillar in the company's ambition to lead the global shift toward electric mobility.
