Austria, 20 July 2025: Austrian Post is set to achieve a major sustainability milestone by year’s end. All deliveries in Vienna, including letters, parcels, newspapers, and brochures, will be carried out with zero CO₂ emissions. This transformation is being made possible through a dedicated fleet of electric vehicles, bicycles, and on-foot delivery, making Vienna the first major European city to achieve zero-emission last-mile logistics.

Already, over 700 electric vehicles are in operation across Vienna, representing more than half of Austrian Post’s 1,100 local delivery fleet. By the end of the year, the addition of 400 more EVs and the completion of the charging infrastructure will enable fully emission-free deliveries to more than 2 million residents every day.

In an official press release by Österreichische Post, Walter Oblin, CEO of Österreichische Post AG, stated, “Even in challenging times, we are staying true to our course and consistently pursuing our sustainability strategy. With the comprehensive switch to e-mobility in Vienna, our federal capital will become the first European metropolis of this size where all mail will be delivered exclusively on foot, by bicycle, or by electric vehicle. This investment underscores our commitment and is an important milestone on the path to a climate-friendly future."

Peter Umundum, Board Member for Parcel & Logistics, Österreichische Post AG, stated, "With around 700 electric vehicles, more than half of our fleet in Vienna has already been converted to e-mobility. By the end of the year, we will install the final charging stations and put another 400 electric vehicles into operation in Vienna. This will mean that more than two million residents will be served CO2-free on the last mile by the end of the year. This is unique in Europe!"

To power this ambitious shift, Austrian Post is allocating €32 million toward the rollout of electric vehicles and a comprehensive charging infrastructure across Vienna. Once the transition is complete, more than 1,500 delivery staff will navigate the city daily on foot or using e-vans, e-bikes, and e-mopeds, ensuring every delivery is made without emitting a single gram of CO₂.

Nationwide, Austrian Post operates the largest electric delivery fleet in the country, now exceeding 5,000 vehicles. Since 2022, the company has exclusively procured EVs, adding around 1,000 new electric vehicles annually. The long-term goal: a fully electrified 10,000-vehicle delivery fleet across Austria by 2030, ensuring 100% CO₂-free delivery nationwide.

The company has installed photovoltaic systems at 34 locations, generating over 18 megawatts-peak (MWp), enough to supply solar power to 3,000 electric vehicles. Over 20% of Austrian Post’s electricity now comes from renewables, placing it among the country's largest non-utility producers of green energy.

With Vienna on the cusp of becoming Europe’s first capital to run a 100% carbon-free postal delivery system, Austrian Post is leading by example. Its aggressive push toward electrification and renewable energy integration signals a clear commitment to reshaping urban logistics and tackling climate change one delivery at a time.
