United Kingdom, 21 January 2026 —The UK government has announced a £43 million investment to accelerate the development of green aviation technologies, reinforcing its commitment to achieving net-zero aviation emissions by 2050.
Unveiled on 20 January 2026 by the Department for Transport and Transport Secretary Rt Hon Heidi Alexander MP, the funding will support a series of research and development projects focused on zero-emission aircraft, hydrogen propulsion, sustainable aviation fuels, and measures to reduce climate-warming contrails.
In an official press release, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, “This investment will provide the cutting-edge technology of the future, boost the economy, and create highly skilled jobs as part of our mission to drive national renewal. Zero-emission planes, hydrogen fuels, and other emerging technologies are vital to reducing the climate impact of aviation while supporting airport expansion and economic growth.”
The funding forms part of a broader government strategy linked to the planned expansion of Heathrow, Gatwick, and Luton airports. As part of this initiative, the Secretary of Transport has met with airlines, airports, engineering firms, and innovators to explore how advanced technologies can decarbonise aviation while maintaining economic competitiveness.
The UK Government estimates low-carbon aviation fuel production alone could contribute up to £5 billion to the UK economy by 2050. Officials expect the £43 million programme to attract millions more in private investment and support high-value roles in science, engineering, and advanced manufacturing.
Companies, researchers, and universities across the UK will be invited to apply for funding through competitive calls launching in February. Supported projects will focus on technologies and operational solutions that directly contribute to achieving net-zero aviation.
Welcoming the announcement, the Hydrogen Aviation Alliance said that, “hydrogen-powered aviation is critical for the UK to lead the future of aviation. The government’s support for pioneering companies and enabling the Civil Aviation Authority to set the right regulations for hydrogen fuel are key steps toward making hydrogen flights a reality.”
Duncan McCourt, CEO of Sustainable Aviation, further added, “Aviation is one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize. This funding will help turn ambition into operational reality along key decarbonization pathways, contributing to carbon-neutral skies.”
Tim Alderslade, CEO of Airlines UK, commented, “Current investments in zero- or lower-emission technology play a crucial role in achieving a sustainable aviation future for the UK. This builds on last year’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel mandate and the soon-to-be-approved SAF revenue certainty mechanism. Continued collaboration through the Jet Zero Taskforce is essential to keeping net zero on track for our sector.”
The investment underscores the UK government’s commitment to decarbonising one of the most challenging sectors of the economy while safeguarding long-term growth. By accelerating innovation in zero-emission aircraft, fuels, and aviation systems, the initiative reinforces the UK’s ambition to lead the global transition toward a more sustainable aviation industry aligned with its net-zero goals.
