Pioneering Sustainability in the Region, Ras Al Khaimah Earns EarthCheck Silver Certification

09 Oct, 2023: Ras Al Khaimah received the Silver Certification through EarthCheck's Sustainable Destinations program, the preeminent scientific benchmarking and certification initiative for tourism destinations. This achievement establishes the emirate as the inaugural destination in the Middle East to attain such a high level of recognition for its sustainability efforts.

The certification process relies on EarthCheck's rigorous scientific standards and includes thorough examination, comparison and evaluation across ten sustainability metrics. These metrics encompass aspects such as energy and water usage, waste handling, carbon emissions assessment, and community involvement.

The significance of Ras Al Khaimah's sustainability certification is underscored by the unique challenges posed by the region's climate, which demand a more robust strategy for managing energy and water consumption to meet the stringent criteria set by EarthCheck.

In a publication by Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA), RAKTDA CEO, Raki Phillips, said that achieving EarthCheck’s Silver Certification reinforced Ras Al Khaimah’s ambition to become the UAE’s and the region’s sustainable tourism leader by 2025. This landmark achievement amplifies our commitment to sustainable, balanced, and purpose-driven tourism industry growth.’’

The Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority has introduced its own sustainability accreditation initiative for tourism enterprises, known as "Responsible RAK’’.

ResponsibleRAK leverages EarthCheck's scientific methodology and data to ensure that businesses are actively measuring their environmental impact and implementing tangible sustainability measures.

A multitude of tourism establishments in Ras Al Khaimah, spanning hotels, attractions and travel agencies, have been awarded the prestigious Responsible RAK Silver Certification. Notable recipients include:

  • Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA)
  • The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Hamra Beach
  • The Cove Rotana Resort Ras Al Khaimah
  • Jais Flight, the world’s longest zipline
  • Jais Sledder, the region’s longest toboggan ride
  • 1484 by Puro, the UAE’s highest restaurant
  • Bear Grylls Explorers Camp
  • RAK Leisure Administration Office
  • SAFARAK Travel and Tour company

More stakeholders are expected to attain the Responsible RAK Silver status in the near future. The location is also collaborating with prominent developers and operators who prioritise sustainability as a core element of their operations. A notable instance of this commitment is the highly anticipated Wynn Al Marjan Island project, being undertaken in partnership with local entities Marjan LLC and RAK Hospitality Holding LLC. This project is committed to uphold the highest sustainability standards. Wynn Resorts' dedication to sustainable design and development has resulted in the global recognition of its buildings with LEED Platinum and Four Green Globes certifications.

Ras Al Khaimah's attainment of the EarthCheck Silver Certification represents a significant milestone in the emirate's journey towards environmental stewardship and sustainability. This achievement not only underscores Ras Al Khaimah's dedication to preserving its natural beauty and resources but also sets a remarkable precedent for the broader region. As more stakeholders work towards Responsible RAK Silver status, it is evident that sustainability is becoming a fundamental aspect of the emirate's development and progress.
