Spain, 24 November 2025: Zelestra has signed a new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Microsoft for two solar projects in Zaragoza, Aragón, totaling 95.7 MWac, accompanied by a community-focused sustainability initiative led by ECODES. The collaboration brings together global renewable energy developer Zelestra, Microsoft, and the Aragón-based nonprofit ECODES to advance clean power generation and strengthen social and environmental investment across the region.
Under the long-term PPA, Microsoft will buy clean electricity generated by Zelestra’s Escatrón II and Fuendetodos II solar farms, both under construction in Zaragoza and offering a combined capacity of 95.7 MWac. This agreement directly supports Microsoft’s renewable energy targets and its broader ambition to operate carbon-negative facilities.
A distinctive element of the collaboration is its Community Benefits Program. Through this initiative, ECODES, an Aragón-based nonprofit, will receive financial support to drive community-level sustainability and social-impact initiatives. The organization will coordinate grant-making efforts to fund projects that expand access to sustainable infrastructure, improve environmental conditions, foster economic opportunity, and strengthen local organizations serving vulnerable groups. The focus is to ensure communities most affected by the energy transition benefit from the shift to clean power.
In an official press release by Zelestra Scarlett Alvarez Uzcategui, Chief Stakeholder and Sustainability Officer at Zelestra, stated, “This progressive collaboration with ECODES and Microsoft aligns perfectly with our commitment to deliver meaningful, positive impact in the communities where we operate. We will be present in Aragón for the long-term, managing our projects to support Microsoft’s clean energy needs, and we are certain that the benefits of this initiative will also have a lasting positive impact for communities nearby.”
The initiative aligns closely with Zelestra’s global social investment framework, known as the “3 Es”-Education, Energy, and Environment - and reinforces Microsoft’s Datacenter Community Pledge, which aims to deliver positive social outcomes alongside its growing digital infrastructure footprint. The partnership also advances ECODES’ mission to ensure a fair and inclusive energy transition across Spain.
In the same press release, Cecilia Foronda, Head of Action for a Just Ecological Transition at ECODES, said, “This collaboration with Zelestra and Microsoft is a unique opportunity to help accelerate the transition to a green, inclusive, and responsible economy in Aragon and across Spain. ECODES commits to listen to local stakeholders so that the benefits of this collaboration reach those who need them most, strengthening social participation and territorial balance and leaving no one behind.”
Zelestra manages a global portfolio of around 32 GW of zero-carbon projects across the U.S., Germany, Spain, Italy, Latin America, and India. Of this, 6.8 GW is already contracted and either operating, being built, or in advanced pre-construction stages. The company develops, commercialises, builds, and operates utility-scale renewable energy projects. Zelestra is supported by EQT, one of the world’s largest investment groups, which oversees more than €267 billion in assets under management.
In the same press release, Eoin Doherty, Vice President and EMEA Regional Leader for Cloud Operations + Innovation at Microsoft, added, “As Microsoft grows its presence in Aragon, we are committed to advancing community prosperity, well-being, and sustainability. This collaboration with Zelestra and ECODES is an important part of fulfilling this commitment and ensuring that we meet our clean energy goals in a way that delivers lasting benefits to the local community.”
This three-way collaboration between Zelestra, Microsoft, and ECODES sets a strong example of how clean energy procurement can be paired with meaningful community investment. By combining renewable power development with targeted social impact programs, the partnership not only advances the region’s sustainability ambitions but also ensures that Aragón’s communities share directly in the benefits of the energy transition.
