Lucid Motors, an American automotive company, claims its first all-electric sedan can travel up to 517 miles of distance per charge, exceeding top EV models such as the Tesla Model S, which has dominated the range game for years with 402 miles of range. The benchmark range was secured by Lucid Motors with validation from FEV North America Inc. in Auburn Hills, Michigan. FEV is an international engineering vehicle and powertrain development service provider, with service offerings that include range certification.
With 1111 horsepower, the 2022 Lucid Air aspires to be much more than a mere Tesla rip-off. Motor Trend recently drove Lucid Air 445 miles from Los Angeles to the Bay Area on a single charge, with a remaining range of 30 miles. According to Motor Trend, the car is estimated to achieve an EPA-rated range of 517 miles on a single charge. That easily tops Tesla’s industry-leading 402 miles with a version of the Model S. Earlier this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the next-generation Tesla Roadster, which is expected to go into production in 2022, will have a range of 620 miles. In an interview with Forbes, Lucid Motors CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson, who led the development of the Model S, said the Air will outmatch Tesla in terms of interior luxury, accelerating from 0 to 60mph in 2.5 seconds.
Lucid Motors was founded in 2007 under the name Atieva and spent years focused on battery technology. In 2016, the company changed its name to Lucid and started supplying batteries to the Formula E racing series. Lucid raised more than USD 1 billion from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund in September 2018, since then it’s been building a factory in Arizona and hiring experienced executives from the world’s leading automakers.
Lucid Motors Air sedan boasts a functional and fashionable aerodynamic shape. Its upscale and spacious cabin is covered by a glassy canopy that mixes practicality with technology, sporting capacious storage options and no shortage of driver assists. The company says that owners should be able to resupply 300 miles of range in 20 minutes at a fast-charging station.Electric Vehicles have a firm stance in the market, automakers are focusing their expertise on improving them, and one big focus is on increasing the range. For years, Tesla has been holding the key to EVs with the longest range, with its Model S Plaid packing a decent 396-mile range, and its Roadster promising a mighty 620-mile range when it hits the roads. Until the Roadster comes to life, Lucid Air saw its debut roughly a year ago, and now it's finally here with its impressive 517-mile range.
