DHL eCommerce Sets The UK's First Carbon-Neutral Hub

12 June 2024: DHL eCommerce, a global leader in logistics and parcel delivery services, has opened its first carbon-neutral site in the UK. Situated in Camberley, in the picturesque south of England, the facility represents a milestone in DHL's ongoing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting eco-friendly practices in the e-commerce industry.

With a substantial investment of £7 million (US$8.9 million), the Camberley site boasts cutting-edge technology and innovative design features aimed at minimising energy consumption and maximising efficiency. One of the standout features is its reliance on solar energy, with almost the entire facility powered by renewable sources. This emphasis on sustainability has earned the site the highest Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of A+, setting a new benchmark for environmental responsibility in the logistics sector.

Utilising IoT technology to optimise energy usage, low-use water appliances, and the incorporation of materials with low embodied carbon, the Camberley hub exemplifies DHL's commitment to sustainable operations. Furthermore, in cases where weather conditions require additional power, the facility will source renewable energy from the grid, further reducing its environmental impact.

Designed to handle up to 10,000 parcels per day, the Camberley site is equipped with 10 electric van charging points, underscoring DHL's dedication to embracing electric mobility and reducing emissions. This move towards electrification aligns with broader efforts to combat climate change and improve air quality in urban areas.

Stuart Hill, CEO of DHL eCommerce UK, emphasised the significance of the Camberley site as a model for sustainable growth within the industry. He noted that the new Camberley site exemplifies their commitment to sustainable growth in the UK, serving as a blueprint for the industry. Additionally, with the impending opening of the Coventry Hub, they aim to increase capacity and improve service levels nationwide.

In addition to its environmental initiatives, the Camberley facility prioritises employee well-being through biophilic design principles, which aim to enhance connectivity to the natural environment. Features such as a living wall in the lobby and amenities like EV charging stations and a sustainable cycle shed further promote sustainable living among employees, aligning with DHL's broader sustainability goals.

As DHL continues to invest in infrastructure and technology to meet the growing demands of e-commerce, its commitment to environmental stewardship sets a positive example for the industry. The launch of the Camberley site marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of a greener, more sustainable future for logistics and parcel delivery services in the UK and beyond.
