July 14, 2025: Sønderborg Airport has made history as the first Danish airport to launch an electric aircraft on a domestic route. On 11 July, a 100% electrically powered aircraft from Beta Technologies successfully completed the journey from Sønderborg to Copenhagen. The route is now being serviced by an ALIA CTOL electric aircraft from Beta Technologies. Fully laden, the aircraft boasts a range of up to 622 kilometres, more than sufficient for the 200-kilometre route between Sønderborg and the capital.

The inaugural all-electric flight marks a major milestone in Sønderborg’s ambitious climate strategy under ‘ProjectZero’, launched in 2007. Since its inception, the municipality in southern Denmark has cut its CO₂ emissions by 69% and is on track to become climate-neutral by 2029. The city’s leadership in decarbonisation has earned it recognition as the global capital of energy efficiency by the International Energy Agency.

Beta Technologies focuses on developing purely electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft. The small ALIA CTOL model used for this demonstration flight is available in both CTOL (Conventional Takeoff and Landing) and VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) versions. It is designed for operations in urban and regional areas, with a manufacturer-claimed maximum range of around 622 kilometres.

In an official press release by presseportal, Jürgen Mads Clausen, Chairman Emeritus of Danfoss and co-initiator of ProjectZero, stated, “In our estimation, we will have the battery technology for larger commercial electric aircraft within the next ten years. The transition to electric flight depends on further breakthroughs, especially in batteries and lightweight materials. I don’t see this as a one-off breakthrough, but as the beginning of a new era. But just as with electric cars, it’s important to be ready once the development gets going. Once the technology has matured, it will happen very quickly.”

The successful launch of Denmark’s first domestic electric flight is not only a breakthrough in sustainable aviation but also a strong signal of the country’s commitment to carbon neutrality. As Sønderborg leads the charge with real-world solutions and strategic partnerships, this initiative marks a significant step toward cleaner skies and a more energy-efficient future.
