Bordered by French Guiana to the east, Guyana to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the north, and Brazil to the south, Suriname is one of the smallest countries in South America. Formerly known as Dutch Guiana, Suriname was captured by the Netherlands in 1667 and the country gained its independence on November 25, 1975. The Caribbean country is currently in the news for a series of successful deep-water oil and gas discoveries and is attracting the attention of international stakeholders. Within just one year at least five massive reserves have been identified off the coast of Suriname.
The first Oil discovery in Suriname was made in 1928 in the District of Nickerie on the coastal plain close to the border with Guyana. The US Geological Survey estimates that the region may contain 13.6bn bl of oil, 21.2 trillion ft³ (600bn m³) of natural gas, and 574mn bl of natural gas liquids. So far five discoveries have been made in Suriname's offshore Block 58 and Block 52. The discoveries include Maka Central-1 in Block 58, Sapakara West-1 in Block 58, Kwaskwasi-1 in Block 58, Sloanea-1 in Block 52, and Keskesi East-1 in Block 58. The discoveries have caught the attention of the global oil and gas industry players including Exxon Mobil, Total, Apache, Petronas, and many others. A number of contracts have already been signed with a number of IOCs recognized for their success in frontier exploration.
