Sweden, 20 May 2025: Volvo Trucks has revealed the first look at its next-generation long-haul electric truck, the FH Aero Electric, set to launch in Q2 2026. The Swedish manufacturer has shared a glimpse into its capabilities, including a massive 780 kWh battery capacity, marking a new benchmark in commercial electric transport. Engineered for extended freight journeys, the FH Aero Electric is projected to offer a driving range of up to 600 kilometres per charge.
The new model pushes boundaries in design and performance. Built with a new e-axle that consolidates all drivetrain components at the rear, the architecture frees up space for eight battery packs, which is two more than its predecessor, the FH Electric. Charging from 20% to 80% in about 40 minutes will be possible through compatibility with the new Megawatt Charging System, allowing drivers to recharge during legally mandated rest periods in the EU.
Volvo claims the FH Aero Electric delivers payload capabilities on par with conventional diesel trucks, offering a gross combination weight of up to 48 tonnes where regulations allow. The truck will feature an aerodynamic cab, mirror-replacing cameras, and enhanced fairings, as well as in standard Volvo cab variants. The 6×2 axle configuration with a liftable and steerable tag axle aids weight distribution and improves handling under heavy loads.
In an official press release by Volvo Trucks, Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks stated, “This is a real breakthrough in zero-emission transport. Now, transport companies can operate really long distances with electric trucks without having to compromise on productivity. The superfast charging and high payload capacity make this a very competitive solution,”
“Electric trucks in long-haul operation will make an important contribution to reduce CO2 in our industry, since this is where you can save the most per truck. This is positive news for transport companies and for society.”
Since debuting its electric lineup in 2019, Volvo Trucks has successfully deployed more than 4,900 electric trucks in 49 countries around the world. The FH Aero Electric advances beyond the foundation set by the existing FH Electric, which features a 540 kWh battery and delivers a range of up to 300 kilometers, primarily suited for regional haulage.
With the upcoming FH Aero Electric, Volvo Trucks is preparing to revolutionise long-haul freight by combining extended range, fast charging, and high payload capacity. This next-generation model signals a crucial evolution in the company’s electric roadmap and positions Volvo as a frontrunner in the decarbonization of heavy transport.
