United Kingdom, 26th February 2025: Bill Esterson MP, Chair of the Energy Security and Net Zero (ESNZ) Committee, has hailed the UK Climate Change Committee’s 7th Carbon Budget as a transformative opportunity for the nation. Speaking on its recent publication, Esterson emphasized the significant benefits of accelerating the transition to clean energy, calling it a "huge prize" that could reshape the UK’s economic and environmental landscape.
“The 7th Carbon Budget lays out a clear path to not just cheaper energy bills—potentially saving households hundreds of pounds—but also shielding us from the volatility of fossil fuel markets,” Esterson said in an official press release by the UK Parliament. He pointed to the £40 billion of taxpayers’ money spent in 2022 to offset a single winter’s energy price surge as a stark reminder of the risks of inaction. “With public finances already under strain, we cannot afford to be caught off guard by the next inevitable gas price shock. The clean energy transition is our way forward.”
Esterson stressed that achieving these gains requires more than just policy—it demands public enthusiasm and engagement. “We need to capture people’s imagination, showing them the tangible advantages of low-carbon technologies that will drive down costs,” he said. Central to this vision is sustained investment, which he described as “significant, steady, and essential” to unlocking the full potential of the UK’s green sector.
The numbers back up his optimism. According to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), the UK’s green economy is growing at three times the rate of the wider economy. The Climate Change Committee’s latest budget outlines a roadmap to extend that growth, boosting productivity and creating skilled jobs nationwide. “This is the future,” Esterson concluded. “We must invest in it, make the case loudly and clearly, and bring the public along with us.”
The 7th Carbon Budget sets ambitious targets for reducing emissions while reinforcing energy security—a dual mission that Esterson and the ESNZ Committee see as critical to the UK’s prosperity. As discussions around its implementation unfold, this latest framework promises to be a cornerstone of the nation’s journey to net zero.
