United Kingdom, 04 March 2025: The UK’s EV infrastructure has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 75,000 public charge points nationwide. According to Zapmap’s latest analysis, there are 75,675 charge points across the country, marking a 32% increase from the 57,290 devices recorded in February 2024.
The 75,000th charge point, operated by Ionity, is located at the Village Hotel in Bristol. This site features four quick devices and eight ultra-rapid chargers with a combined capacity of 350 kW. Strategically positioned near the M4, M5, and M32 motorways, it offers EV drivers convenient access for en-route charging.
The ultra-rapid charging segment (150kW+) has experienced remarkable growth, with a 74% increase in installations since the end of February 2024. This expansion caters to various charging needs, from en-route charging for longer journeys to destination charging at hotels and leisure centers, as well as lower-powered charge points on residential streets for drivers without home charging options.
Moving forward, the EV infrastructure is anticipated to continue its robust growth. Projects funded by the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) are set to roll out a substantial number of on-street chargers in the latter half of the year, complemented by private sector investments. Charge point operators are increasingly focusing on reliability and simplified payment systems, aiming to enhance the overall EV driver experience.
Melanie Shufflebotham, Co-founder & COO at Zapmap, in an official press release by Zapmap stated, "Having 75,000 public charge points available, across the different charging use cases, is a significant milestone for the UK EV market.” He further added, "An extensive network of public charging, especially high visibility hubs, helps drive confidence for the next wave of drivers who will be making the switch to electric over the next few years. As the infrastructure continues to grow, Zapmap’s focus is to make sure that EV drivers have access to the best up-to-date information so they can find and pay for public charging with confidence."
In the press release, Vicky Read, CEO at ChargeUK, commented, "Reaching 75,000 public charge points is a significant milestone and an incredible achievement for an industry that is barely a decade old. Further he added, "We know a successful transition to EVs depends on world-class charging infrastructure being deployed ahead of demand. Today’s announcement is yet more proof that ChargeUK’s members are getting on with the job, with the public network having grown by 37% in 2024.
"But now is not the time for complacency. Millions more EVs will be on the road in the coming years, and we need to continue to work together to ensure the UK’s charging infrastructure remains ahead of the curve."
This milestone reflects the UK's commitment to supporting the growing number of EV drivers and promoting sustainable transportation solutions.
