United Kingdom,17 April 2025: In its ongoing mission to decarbonise operations and modernise its vehicle fleet, National Highways, the agency responsible for operating, maintaining, and improving over 4,500 miles of motorways and major A-roads across England, has once again turned to Toyota as a trusted partner. A recent order comprising 18 Proace Electric vans and 40 additional bZ4X electric SUVs marks a significant step in the organisation’s journey toward full fleet electrification.

This latest procurement builds upon the earlier delivery of 50 Toyota bZ4X electric SUVs in 2024, reinforcing Toyota’s position as one of National Highways' key mobility partners. The Toyota Proace Electric, part of the Toyota Professional Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) range, was chosen as the first van model in National Highways’ transition, selected for its robust reliability, practicality and zero-emission credentials.

In an official press release by One Toyota Fleet Services, Andy Butterfield, Director of Operational Services at National Highways stated, “Our operations run 24/7 to keep roads safe, well maintained and free-flowing helping people reach their destinations safely and on time. These new vehicles will support that round-the-clock service, particularly for asset inspectors keeping vital infrastructure in check. Just as importantly, they represent a major step in cutting our carbon footprint. By 2027, all our non-traffic officer light vehicles will be electric, with traffic officer vehicles following by 2030. It’s a big shift and this investment proves we’re committed to making it happen.”

In the same press release, Neil Broad, General Manager at One Toyota Fleet Services  echoed the sentiment as, “It is rewarding to partner again with National Highways and support their work across the country maintaining the safety of our road network. As more businesses look to make the switch to electric vehicles, we have a team able to provide guidance and support along with one of the largest ranges of commercial vehicles available in the UK market.”

National Highways' continued investment in electrified transportation demonstrates how public sector organisations can lead by example in the transition to a cleaner, more su423stainable future. Through strategic partnerships and forward-thinking policies, the shift toward zero-emission operations is not just an environmental necessity but also a practical, scalable reality.
