Spain, 17 June 2025: In a major step towards sustainable mobility, Madrid has inaugurated one of the largest electric vehicle charging parks in Spain. Spanning 1,260 square meters, the new EV hub features 47 charging points and is designed to serve not only the capital but also the neighbouring cities of Getafe, Fuenlabrada, Alcorcón, and Leganés. The facility aims to significantly enhance regional accessibility to clean transportation infrastructure.
The project was developed in partnership with Iberdrola España, a leading energy provider known for its commitment to renewable energy and smart grid technologies. Leveraging its expertise, Iberdrola España ensured the hub is powered by sustainable energy sources and equipped with advanced charging solutions, aligning with the broader goals of decarbonising urban mobility in Spain
Strategically located between these urban centers and adjacent to the Parque Polvoranca commuter train station, the hub is easily accessible via major highways including the M-406, M-407, M-409, and M-50. With a service radius covering approximately 750,000 residents, the new station is set to become a cornerstone of Madrid’s EV infrastructure.
Out of the 47 chargers installed, 15 are classified as ultra-fast, comprising seven 350kW and eight 240kW chargers capable of delivering up to 80% battery charge in less than 15 minutes. The remaining units include ten 60kW fast chargers and 22 semi-fast 22kW chargers. All chargers are powered by 100% renewable energy and are supported by on-site solar panels, which also supply energy to the surrounding community.
In an official press release by Iberdrola España, Antonio Armengot, Iberdrola Clientes representative in Madrid, stated that “Electric mobility requires public–private partnerships to advance in residents’ well-being and contribute to improving air quality in cities and their sustainable development. At Iberdrola España, we were pioneers in our commitment to electric mobility, and today we are leaders in public charging with more than 9,500 points in operation located on major roads and cities, as well as in small towns and back roads.”
In the same press release, the Mayor of Leganés, Miguel Ángel Recuenco, expressed his satisfaction and stated, “New investments are coming to the city, and if they’re sustainable from an economic, environmental, and social point of view, even better. And the installation of this electric charging station meets all these requirements easily. Besides encouraging sustainable mobility with the charging points for electric vehicles, it also has a solar photovoltaic system that will enable families in the surrounding area to benefit from and save on their electricity bills by consuming this energy without the need for their own installation or investment.”
The project received financial support through the EU-backed MOVES Singular Projects II Programme under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, aimed at accelerating Europe’s green transition.
The launch of Madrid’s largest fast-charging park reflects the city’s growing leadership in Spain’s sustainable transport transformation. By combining high-capacity infrastructure, renewable energy, and regional accessibility, the initiative represents a scalable model for EV adoption across Europe, one powered by public-private collaboration and forward-thinking urban planning.
