Shell and Hyundai Partner To Enhance Charging Infrastructure For Electric Vehicles In India

Gurugram, May 17, 2023: Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) and Shell India have entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to enhance the charging infrastructure in India. The partnership intends to deploy DC fast chargers in 36 electric vehicle dealerships nationwide, demonstrating a notable stride in encouraging the widespread use of electric vehicles in India. If deemed feasible, Shell India will explore the possibility of installing 120kW DC fast chargers in dealerships instead of the currently planned 60kW DC fast chargers.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was officially signed between Hyundai Motor India and Shell India at Hyundai Motor India's headquarters in Gurugram, Haryana. The signing took place in the presence of Jae Wan Ryu, Executive Director of Hyundai Motor India, and Sanjay Varkey, Director of Shell India. This significant strategic partnership is aimed at advancing the charging infrastructure for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) across India.

Commenting on this collaboration, Unsoo Kim, MD and CEO, Hyundai Motor India said in the company’s official press release, “As a customer-centric organisation, we are constantly striving to enhance customer convenience and pursue strategic partnerships that would support the government’s vision of clean mobility." He further stated, "This partnership will power up the nations’ electric mobility mission by offering end-to-end EV charging infrastructure at HMIL Dealerships”.

The partnership allows customers to benefit from the advantages of fast charging, clean energy, and round-the-clock customer support, setting a new standard for customer experience in the shift towards sustainable transportation.

In its dedication to a sustainable future, HMIL has made investments and developed its own Charger Management Systems (CMS). This CMS serves as an inclusive platform, allowing electric vehicle (EV) customers, irrespective of the brand, to access a smooth and hassle-free charging experience. Through this partnership, Shell's network of chargers will be integrated into Hyundai's CMS, alongside HMIL's own chargers and those provided by third-party Charge Point Operators. The CMS offers advanced features such as digital payment, location services, and navigation, making it a pioneering initiative in the automotive industry to facilitate EV charging in India.

With Shell's expertise in energy solutions and Hyundai's commitment to sustainable mobility, this partnership has the potential to revolutionise the EV charging landscape in India. As the country strives to reduce carbon emissions and shifts towards cleaner transportation, this collaboration sets a promising example for future endeavours in the EV industry.
