04 December, 2024: Saudi Arabia and Lithuania took a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties with the signing of an air transport agreement designed to increase connectivity between the two nations. The agreement aims to facilitate both passenger and cargo air services between Lithuania and Saudi Arabia, and extend beyond the broader Middle East region.
The Lithuanian Ministry of Transport welcomed the deal, highlighting its potential to boost air traffic to and from the region. According to the ministry, the agreement will allow passenger and cargo aircraft to travel to Saudi Arabia not only from Lithuania but also from other nations, opening up new routes and opportunities for businesses and travelers alike.
This new agreement builds on previous discussions, particularly a Letter of Intent signed during a visit to Saudi Arabia by Lithuanian Transport Minister Marius Skuodis in 2023. Minister Skuodis and his Saudi counterpart, Saleh Bin Nasser Al-Jasser, held extensive talks during the visit, ultimately paving the way for the formal agreement this week.
In the official press release, Marius Skuodis, the Acting Minister of Transport and Communications, stated, “We see the Saudi Arabian aviation market as very promising and the demand for services is growing, so the signing of this agreement marks an important step towards further dialogue for smoother bilateral cooperation in the field of transport. This agreement will open up opportunities for the organisation of both passenger and cargo air transport, and Lithuanian companies are ready for this.”
The agreement opens up avenues for both passenger and cargo transport between the two nations. Lithuania, with its robust aviation sector, sees potential for its airlines to tap into the Saudi market, particularly during the winter season, when demand for air services in the region remains high. Saudi Arabia’s steady flow of international passengers, especially those traveling to Mecca for pilgrimages, presents a unique opportunity for Lithuanian carriers to maintain their aircraft load factor.
As part of the agreement, provisions are set to govern key aspects of air travel, including the operation of scheduled air services, granting and revoking authorisations, and the application of tariffs. The agreement also covers vital areas such as aviation security, flight safety, and the recognition of certificates and licenses. Additionally, the deal will streamline the provision of ground handling services and leasing of aircraft.
Lithuania, home to nine registered air carriers, boasts a fleet of 68 aircraft operating commercial flights. With this new agreement, Lithuanian companies are well-positioned to tap into the growing demand for air transport in Saudi Arabia, reinforcing the nation's role as a significant hub for international travel.
The deal is seen as a promising development for both countries, creating opportunities for enhanced cooperation in the transport sector, and contributing to further strengthening economic ties between Saudi Arabia and Lithuania.
