UK, 16 May 25: Royal Mail UK has marked a significant step in its journey toward sustainable delivery by rolling out its 7,000th electric vehicle, further solidifying its status as the operator of the UK’s largest electric delivery fleet. This landmark change of the iconic red vans reimagined with zero-emissions capability is introduced at the South Lambeth Delivery Office, joining 70 electric vans already in service there.
Building on this progress, the company announced plans to introduce 1,800 additional electric vans over the coming year, supported by major investments in its charging infrastructure. Nearly half of the new vehicles will be manufactured in the UK at Stellantis’s Ellesmere Port facility, reinforcing Royal Mail’s commitment to clean mobility while supporting local industry and sustainable innovation.
In an official press release by International Distribution Services, Alistair Cochrane, Royal Mail’s Chief Operating Officer, stated, “Today, we’ve hit a major milestone in our journey to reach Net-Zero by 2040. We’ve strengthened our position as the UK’s largest electric delivery fleet and our investment in 1,800 more zero-emission vans will help us maintain this in the future. Royal Mail is going the extra mile to decarbonise its fleet, with huge benefits for our posties, our customers and the planet.”
In the same press release, Lilian Greenwood MP, Minister for the Future of Roads said, “Today’s unveiling of its 7,000th EV is a crucial milestone for Royal Mail as it continues to decarbonise its fleet of iconic red vans. It comes as we’re investing £120m to help businesses follow Royal Mail’s lead and buy zero emission vans.”
