Octopus & BYD Unveils UK's First All-Inclusive V2G EV Bundle

London, 23rd June 2025: In a major move to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and smart energy technology, Octopus Energy, the UK’s largest energy supplier has collaborated with a global EV leader BYD to launch the Power Pack Bundle, the UK’s first all-inclusive vehicle-to-grid (V2G) solution. This innovative offering combines an electric vehicle lease with bi-directional charging and free home charging, setting a new standard for the EV ownership experience.

With the new bundle, EV drivers can enjoy free charging, saving approximately £620 annually compared to standard electricity tariffs and nearly £1,000 when compared to running a petrol car. It includes a lease for a V2G-ready BYD Dolphin, a Zaptec Pro bi-directional charger, and access to a smart tariff offering free home charging.

The V2G technology at the heart of this bundle enables electric vehicles to act as mobile energy storage units. These EVs can charge during off-peak hours when electricity is cheaper and send unused power back to the grid during high-demand periods. This not only supports the energy grid and cuts reliance on fossil fuels, but also maintains the core function of the car, which is convenient daily transportation.

The Power Pack Bundle is powered by Kraken, Octopus Energy Group’s proprietary tech platform. Customers benefit from a completely automated system, just plug in the car overnight and let the software optimise charging and discharging. Every mile driven under the lease includes free home charging, making the process seamless and cost-effective.

For the first time, V2G technology is integrated directly into the EV itself, removing the need for expensive first-generation V2G chargers. As more of these advanced vehicles hit the roads, the UK could soon see hundreds of thousands of EVs acting as distributed power sources.

In an official press release by Octopus Energy, Greg Jackson, Founder of Octopus Energy Group, stated, “Bi-directional charging is the game-changer for drivers and the grid. By using some of the battery’s spare capacity to help balance the grid, we can offer free driving. V2G is going to revolutionise our energy system and help drive costs down.”

The collaboration has also expanded to include Motability Operations, the UK’s leading vehicle leasing company for disabled people. This partnership ensures that the benefits of V2G technology are inclusive and accessible to all drivers, including those with mobility challenges.

In the same press release, Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD, commented, “We’re thrilled to officially launch our V2G project with Octopus Energy and Kraken. BYD is fully committed to making intelligent, innovative, sustainable technologies available to our customers, and this project will allow them to unlock the full potential of electric vehicles, not just as transport but as dynamic assets that can play a key role in supporting the grid. Together with Octopus Energy, we’re enabling EV owners to play an active role in the energy ecosystem, reducing costs and increasing the resilience of renewable power systems.”

This launch marks a defining moment in the evolution of electric mobility and smart energy integration in the UK. By combining cutting-edge V2G technology, affordable leasing, and free home charging into one seamless offering, this partnership is not only making EV ownership more accessible and cost-effective but also transforming electric vehicles into powerful assets for the national grid. This initiative sets a bold new benchmark for sustainable transport, paving the way for a cleaner, smarter, and more resilient future.
