Slovakia, 20 August 2025: Kia has commenced production of the five-door EV4 hatchback at its European facility in Slovakia, marking the brand’s first fully electric model to be built in the region. Backed by extensive upgrades to the production lines, this milestone highlights a pivotal step in Kia’s electrification journey across Europe. The EV4, designed specifically for European consumers, will be assembled at Kia AutoLand Slovakia.

In an official press release by Kia, Marc Hedrich, President and CEO of Kia Europe, stated, “The start of EV4 production is a huge milestone for us. It demonstrates the technical capability and flexibility of our European operations. From 20 August, Slovakia will build fully electric cars alongside models with hybrid and internal combustion powertrains. Through the expansion of our production capabilities, we are supporting our diverse European customer base even more.

In the same press release, Tomáš Potoček, spokesperson for Kia Slovakia, added, “We have been preparing for the EV4’s production launch for a long time. By combining advanced manufacturing technology with the dedication of our skilled workforce, we have successfully begun mass production of this model.

The EV4, built on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) of Hyundai Motor Group, provides efficiency and performance in equal measure. Customers have a choice between an 81.4-kWh extended-range battery and a conventional 58.3-kWh battery. The model integrates advanced energy innovations, including Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) functions. Weight reduction and improved handling are achieved through an aluminium bonnet, while customers can also select from eight exterior colours, including an exclusive matte finish.

First introduced to the world in February 2025, the EV4 represents Kia's "Opposites United" design concept by fusing bold, sharp lines with contemporary styling that appeals to drivers looking for performance, innovation, and environmentally friendly transportation.

Kia’s facility in Žilina has been central to its European operations since opening in 2004. Covering two square kilometres, the plant employs 3,700 workers and uses more than 600 advanced robots across five production areas: press, body, paint, engine, and assembly.

With an annual capacity of 350,000 vehicles and 540,000 engines, the site has produced over five million units for export to 83 countries. This represents roughly 11 per cent of Kia’s global output. With hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, the plant also produces models such as the Kia XCeed and Sportage, which accounted for 25% of output in 2024.

Kia modernised production lines with cutting-edge technologies after investing €108 million, including an EV battery conveyor at the assembly shop's chassis line.

Kia Slovakia has steadily integrated sustainability practices into its operations. The facility has cut CO₂ emissions by 13%, water consumption by 28%, and electricity use per car by 11% since 2014. The facility currently uses only renewable electricity, but by the end of this year, it hopes to generate about 1.5% of its energy from a new photovoltaic power plant.

The EV4's introduction in Slovakia, which combines cutting-edge EV technology, contemporary design, and eco-friendly manufacturing methods, represents a turning point in Kia’s European strategy. By producing fully electric, hybrid, and internal combustion models under one roof, Kia positions itself to address the evolving demands of Europe’s diverse automotive market.
