Italy, May 2, 2025: In an official publication released by Motes-E, the Italian EV market is gaining momentum, as fully electric vehicle registrations soar in the initial months of 2025. Between January and April, 29,668 battery electric vehicles were registered, which is a substantial 82.22% year-over-year increase, signalling growing confidence in zero-emission mobility.

In April 2025 alone, Italy registered 6,646 BEVs, more than doubling the number from April 2024. The BEV market share rose to 4.76%, up from 2.32% a year ago, showing strong upward momentum and increasing consumer interest in clean transportation alternatives.

For the first four months of 2025, BEVs accounted for 5.07% of the total car market, compared to just 2.76% during the same period last year. This steady growth reflects not only a broader acceptance of EV technology but also a growing shift in buyer preferences toward sustainable mobility.

In an official press release by Motus-E, President of Motus-E, Fabio Pressi stated, “The BEV market in Italy is still too small, but it shows important encouraging signs despite the lack of demand stimuli. In the first four months, registrations of electric vehicles almost doubled compared to 2024, while remaining just above 5% of the total market share. Driving the growth are the entry-level models that are finally conquering the market, even if with a still limited offer of models compared to the traditional or hybrid A and especially B segments.”

Fabio Pressi  further added, “We have exceeded the threshold of 300,000 pure electric cars in circulation, but without an organic plan, especially for fleets and vulnerable private individuals, it will be impossible to even get close to the PNIEC objectives for 2030. The commercial vehicle segment, despite a difficult situation for the overall market, sees electric vehicles growing: both vans and trucks exceed 3.3% of the market share, with a special mention for vehicles over 3.5 tons, which in the first four months already exceed the volumes of the entire 2024.”

The sharp rise in electric vehicle registrations marks a promising shift in Italy's automotive landscape, reflecting increasing consumer enthusiasm for sustainable transportation. With over 300,000 BEVs now on Italian roads and significant growth in both passenger and commercial electric vehicles, the country is laying a strong foundation for an electrified future. Continued innovation, strategic planning, and expanded model offerings can help accelerate this momentum, positioning Italy as a key player in the European EV transition.
