Munich, 27 May 2025: The BMW Group has achieved a major milestone in its transition to sustainable mobility; the three-millionth electrified vehicle has rolled off its production line at the company’s headquarters in Munich. The landmark model, a BMW 330e Touring in Portimao Blue, is destined for the UK market and underscores the automaker’s growing momentum in electrification.
The company’s electromobility journey began in 2013 with the launch of the fully electric BMW i3, produced in Leipzig. It was manufactured alongside the BMW i8, BMW’s first plug-in hybrid. Initially built in a dedicated facility, the i3 marked the beginning of a transformation. Today, all BMW Group plants are equipped to manufacture electrified vehicles, supporting a production mix where more than 25% of output in 2024 is electrified, most of which are fully electric.
In an official press release by BMW, Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management responsible for Production, stated, “With its highly flexible production, the BMW Group is able to respond to customer requirements in line with market trends and demand. All plants in our global production network are enabled for electromobility, paving the way for continued growth in this segment.”
BMW’s global production network now integrates electrified and conventional vehicles on the same lines. The MINI Cooper SE entered production in Oxford in 2019, followed by the BMW iX3 in China in 2020, and the BMW iX and i4 in 2021 at Dingolfing and Munich. By 2022, all German plants were ready for BEV production. Facilities in China are fully electrified, while US and Mexican plants are preparing for BEV output by 2026 and 2027. South Africa’s Rosslyn plant began producing plug-in hybrids in 2024.
Supporting this global shift is the Competence Centre for E-Drive Production in Dingolfing, which reached an annual capacity of over 500,000 electric drive units by 2022. As BMW advances into the next era of e-mobility, its sixth-generation e-drives will debut with the NEUE KLASSE, produced at the company’s new facility in Debrecen, Hungary, solidifying BMW’s leadership in electric vehicle innovation.
The rollout of the three-millionth electrified vehicle is more than just a production milestone; it represents BMW Group’s firm commitment to a fully electric future. With its global manufacturing network now comprehensively enabled for e-mobility and new-generation powertrains on the horizon, the company is well-positioned to lead the next wave of automotive innovation. As electrified models continue to gain momentum, BMW skilfully combines its legacy of engineering excellence with an ambitious commitment to sustainable mobility.
