September 4, 2024: BMW Group installs the UK’s first "motionless" wind energy system on the roof of its Oxford Plant. This is part of a project exploring cutting-edge technology for efficient energy solutions. The pilot, led by BMW Group Real Estate, is driven by BMW Startup Garage, a programme that supports early-stage startups developing innovative technologies.

The system leverages Aeromine Technologies’ innovative, low-impact technology, harnessing wind power to generate clean energy without visible moving parts. BMW Group’s Oxford Plant will act as a testing ground for this advanced technology, evaluating its potential to boost energy efficiency across BMW Group sites globally and commercial properties in the UK.

Aeromine Technologies developed the wind energy unit, designed to be installed on the edge of buildings facing prevailing winds. The unit uses wing-like vertical airfoils to create a vacuum effect, pulling air through an internal propeller to produce clean electricity. Unlike conventional wind turbines, Aeromine's bladeless design significantly reduces noise and vibrations, minimising disruption to buildings, the environment, and local wildlife. Made from highly durable, recyclable materials, the unit also aligns with BMW Group's commitment to prioritising sustainability in its strategic goals.

In the company’s official press release, Carmen Gargioni, Team Lead Innovation at BMW Group Real Estate Management, said, “BMW Group is always looking for innovative and efficient solutions in every aspect of the business. The BMW Startup Garage acts as a matchmaker between startups and different business units. New technologies are essential as we strive to find the most efficient solution to our requirements. This includes exciting innovations from new players.”

The new wind energy unit is designed to work alongside Mini Plant Oxford’s existing solar arrays, which have been installed across the site for over a decade. The Body Shop's solar installation, once among the largest roof-mounted solar farms in the UK, includes over 11,000 panels spanning an area equivalent to five football pitches and generating enough electricity to power 850 homes annually.

This installation marks a significant step in BMW Group's commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions. By integrating Aeromine's motionless wind energy system with existing solar arrays, BMW Group aims to enhance energy efficiency and support its broader sustainability goals, setting a new benchmark for renewable energy in industrial settings.
