01 October, 2024: Be.EV, a public EV charging network in the UK has announced plans to install 38 ultra-rapid chargers at four retail centres throughout the UK, marking a significant expansion in EV charging infrastructure. The charge point operator (CPO) stated that many of these installations will become the largest ultra-rapid charging hubs in their respective areas, enhancing access for EV drivers.
The chosen locations for the new charging hubs include Northamptonshire, Birmingham, Kent, and South Gloucestershire. Each site will feature Kempower chargers capable of delivering up to 150 kW of power. While the exact distribution of chargers across the sites has not been disclosed, Be.EV highlighted South Gloucestershire as a region with one of the lowest percentages of EV chargers in the UK. Once completed, the hub there is expected to significantly improve charging options for local residents and visitors.
The £3.5 million agreement was finalised with a portfolio of retail centres backed by Magnetar Capital, with Northdale Advisors serving as the operating partner. Asif Ghafoor, CEO of Be.EV, expressed his satisfaction with the new partnership with Magnetar and Northdale, stating that it would bring ultra-rapid charging to shoppers across their portfolio. He highlighted the dual benefits of increased charging accessibility for the community and enhanced footfall for retailers.
Tim Williams of Northdale Advisors conveyed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting that the rollout of Be.EV’s ultra-rapid chargers will offer a "market-leading amenity" for visitors and attract new customers to their retailers. He also mentioned that the initiative aligns with their broader environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy.
Be.EV is in a growth phase, having recently secured £55 million in funding from NatWest and KfW IPEX-Bank. The company aims to expand its network to over 1,000 fast chargers by the end of the year. Earlier this year, Be.EV joined the Plugsurfing network and opened its first charging hub in Stockport, Greater Manchester, with plans for a second site soon to follow. The charge point operator is backed by Octopus Energy Generation, which invested £110 million last year to support its expansion efforts.
This initiative reflects the growing commitment to enhancing EV infrastructure across the UK, as the demand for sustainable transportation solutions continues to rise.
